Seasonal Matters Rural Relations
Seasonal Matters: Rural Relations is a book that reconsiders contemporary rural challenges through relationships rather than oppositions. Based on seasonal work experiences, it delves into the realm of contemporary agriculture and European labour migration, exploring the socio-political implications on rhythms, rituals, and cohabitation in Europe’s countryside. In close collaboration with the artist collective Seasonal Neighbours we developped a extensive publication displays sixteen contributions, of the interdisciplinary collective to attempts to observe, record and archive narratives for the existing, disappearing and newly emerging relationships in the countryside.
The articles are divided into 5 main chapters. The design concept developed by Bonsma & Reist translates these chapters into the “Layers of Soil” present in agriculture (organic, topsoil, parent material, bedrock). The chapters/layers are colored in the same way as technical agricultural drawings, one color per layer. In this way, the book block simulates a piece of soil. You hold a piece of soil in your hand, so to speak.
The publication is the starting point for a series of events and exhibitions with a performative and discursive format. In addition, a newspaper was produced with the 12 “maps”, which can be hung up as posters during the events.
The book was published in 2 languages, with the black plate being replaced for each language.
