Of Legs and Shadows – Sibylla Walpen

For the first time, the multifaceted work of artist Sibylla Walpen appears in a comprehensive publication. The last twenty years of her work – from sculpture, printmaking, collage and photography to scenography and video – are brought together in a deliberately open layout. Instead of a linear order, the works are arranged freely and associatively. So-called «tags», which run through the book and make recurring themes and motifs visible, provide orientation.

In terms of design, the book responds directly to the aesthetics of Walpen’s works: A variety of papers, the use of special colors, linen, embossing and sticker foils lend the publication a materialized individuality.

A central element is the play with interactivity: several pages are designed as sticker sheets whose pre-cut elements can be detached and reassembled. This creates unusual situations, empty spaces and poetic shifts as you leaf through the pages – “Legs and Shadows”, both literally and figuratively.
