Kahnweiler & Rupf

The publication presents key works from the collection – including pieces by Braque, Klee, Léger, Picasso, Gris, Kandinsky, Macke, and many others – alongside in-depth scholarly essays and the previously unpublished correspondence between collector and gallerist.

Curated and edited by Susanne Friedli and Konrad Tobler.

A particularly striking design feature emerged during the archival research: all documents were meticulously hole-punched. This observation became a central visual element of the catalogue’s design. The facsimiles are reproduced in their original size and position, and the entire book block was perforated after binding – evoking the tactility and authenticity of archival material.

A richly illustrated chronology weaves together personal milestones with broader historical events, offering a deeper understanding of the cultural and temporal setting in which the collection was formed.

Multiple essays provide art-historical insights into the collection and the figures surrounding it. The artworks are reproduced on high-quality coated art paper, with careful attention to color fidelity and detail.

The complete correspondence from the Rupf archive was transcribed and translated. Typographic features – whether handwritten or typewritten – were preserved wherever possible. Selected documents are reproduced in original size, including the authentic position of the hole punches.

All English translations are compiled in the appendix and clearly set apart on light grey-blue paper for optimal readability.
